MINUTES
The Athletic Committee of the Hollidaysburg Area School Board met Wednesday, March 13, 2024 in the Senior High Library, 1510 N. Montgomery Street, Hollidaysburg PA. Ms. Sullivan called the meeting to order at 5:03p.m.
In attendance were Ms. Sullivan, Dr. Li, Ms. Luther, Mr. Brenneman, Dr. Wells, Ms. Bilek, Ms. Costanza, Mr. Green, Mrs. Fiscus, Mrs. Thomas, Mr. Nihart, Mr. Arthur, Mrs. Bell, Mr. Walstrom and Mr. DeLattre.
• Community Member, Melissa Mitchell, spoke on a situation with her daughter and asked the board to review the Coaches Code of Ethics and to make sure a process is in place to re-enforce or train coaches so these types of things don’t occur.
Winter Sports Report:
• Mention of LHAC Individual Champions Kaden Henderson (50y Freestyle) Kara Neeley (100y Backstroke) Chris Shilaos, Maxwell Baronner, Kaden Henderson, and Andrew Shanafelt (400y Relay). Recognized Winter Teams and Individuals to be honored at the April 10th board meeting.
• District 4/6 Class 5-A Girls Basketball Champions – PIAA Qualifier, District 6 Class AAA 50y Freestyle Champion – Kaden Henderson
• PIAA Swimming Qualifiers – Kaden Henderson
• PIAA Wrestling Qualifiers – Mitchell Baronner and Wyatt Maines
We also had many regional wrestling qualifiers and many that placed in swimming district championships. Assistant Wrestling Coach, Mitch Johns and Former Head Wresting Coach Mike Moore were inducted into the D6 Wrestling Coaches Hall of Fame.
Spring Sports Preview:
• Spring Sports Schedules were reviewed. Spring sports participation numbers were reviewed with a 10-year record of over 400 student athletes participating this spring. Expected issues were discussed with travel roster rotating due to busing and the number of uniforms. There will have to be roster reductions made on some of the teams this spring and in the fall. This was communicated to parents in parent meetings.
Restore the Roar Update:
• We continue to wait on grant approval for the weight room project, The Doug Rhodes Training Center. We have received a little over $14,000 in donations to this point with some other donors waiting to see what grant money will be received.
Miscellaneous:
• We continued to host PIAA- District 6 events this winter. We receive rental for these events from D6 or PIAA and the boosters who profit from hosting their events.
• An application for the Tiger Paws re-establishment application has been submitted to Mr. McCall. This will be on for approval at the April 10, 2024 Voting Meeting.
• Budget: A 2023-2024 revenue update was mentioned with a record $112,590 in revenue this fall/winter sport season. It was mentioned that this is largely due to joining the new LHAC and to the successes of our teams this school year. The athletic committee board folders included 2024-2025 Budget detail for athletics.
• College Signings- Volleyball - Lexi McLanahan (Kutztown) Lucy Stanek, (Elizabethtown) Swimming - Maxwell Baronner (Juniata) Softball – Maria Malone (PSU Altoona) Sydney Shay (Grove City) Girls Soccer – Chloe Stoehr (Juniata) Girls Tennis – Megan Ferris (Lock Haven). The potential for NIL (Name, Image and Likeness) deals have been discussed with a local business. This could also include former Golden Tiger Student Athletes currently playing college athletics.
• Officials pay was discussed with the current method and what payment methods could be used moving forward to be most cost effective. The current method may keep us from getting the better officials and more timely payment would help. There will be more discussion once Mr. Whitesel come on board in April.
There being no further business, Ms. Sullivan declared the meeting adjourned at 5:45pm.
